Thelma And Louise - Brad Pitt as J.D. (1991)

Louise is working in a fast food restaurant as a waitress and has some problems with her friend Jimmy, who, as a musician, is always on the road. Thelma is married to Darryl who likes his wife to stay quiet in the kitchen so that he can watch football on TV. One day they decide to break out of their normal life and jump in the car and hit the road. Their journey, however, turns into a flight when Louise kills a man who threatens to rape Thelma. They decide to go to Mexico, but soon they are hunted by American police.

Movie Review:

THELMA & LOUISE has to be regarded as a pure 90s classic that brought up a considerable amount of risk in creating a first-person feminist formula into a mainstream movie, which is often missing. It pulls off fantastically true in form, with the exceptional Southern character talents of the two lady fugitives on the run, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, who may stand out as memorable on the silver screen. Let's not forget that silly truck driver they pass quite often, and of course, cowboy Brad Pitt as a young student. While not needed to be fully reliant on action substances like gunshooting, there is good chemistry within its grasp. Every single minute should not be wasteful, as plenty of refreshing outbursts of enjoyment outweighs the familiar old plot of evading the police. The ending is a definite eye catcher, and also the riskiest ever filmed! Beware of this rip-off called GOOD GIRLS DON'T, another poor B-movie with no redeeming quality. Satisfyingly original, and highly recommended!

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

The film follows the women as they head out in Louise's 1966 Thunderbird for a two-day adventure which starts horribly but then sees them change from victims of circumstance into icons of feminism.

The film shares plot line and visual elements with other road movies, particularly the 1979 movie Messidor by Alain Tanner.

Khouri won an Academy Award for a Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen; Scott, Davis, Sarandon, cinematographer Adrian Biddle, and film editor Thom Noble also won Oscar nominations. The film also won Scott nominations for a CÚsar Award for Best Foreign Film and a DGA Award.

The British Film Institute published a book (ISBN 0851708099) about the film in 2000, as part of a Modern Classics series.

* Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn wanted to make a movie together and one of the scripts they considered was Thelma & Louise but they decided on Death Becomes Her.
* A then struggling actor George Clooney auditioned five times for Ridley Scott for the part of J.D. that part went to Brad Pitt.
* The parts of Thelma & Louise were to be played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Jodie Foster but pitching took so long that Pfeiffer and Foster were no longer available.
* Cher was offered the part of Louise but turned it down.
* In the sequence where Darryl slips and falls over the builder's supplies as he was leaving for work was unscripted, as Christopher McDonald genuinely lost his footing. Despite this he remained in character and yelled at the workmen and drove away. Ridley Scott apparently liked the result, and so it remains in the film.
